Commercial Fishing Boat Strikes Charleston Bridge

Inspectors say the bridge in Charleston wasn’t damaged this afternoon when a commercial fishing vessel struck it. The incident was reported around 3 o’clock. The fishing vessel Oregon Mist made it under the bridge but as the bascule section closed, the captain reportedly lost power and drifted back into the bridge. The US Coast Guard, Port of Coos Bay, and ODOT responded to the area to check the bridge. The boat received damage to its mast. The Charleston Bridge spans Winchester Creek and connects Cape Arago Highway to the Charleston boat basin, state parks, homes, and businesses to the south.
