Coquille Building Damage in Windstorm Cannot Be Saved

Coquille Mayor Sam Flaherty announced this afternoon the former Sherwood Building also known as the First National Bank building will have to be torn down. The building sustained extreme damage in a windstorm earlier this month. Owner Paul Recanzone was refurbishing the building to house businesses on the first floor and affordable housing on the second floor. Cracks and stress fractures were noticed while work was being conducted yesterday and roads around the building at the corner of Central and First were shut down. Engineers determined the storm damage to the cornice of the building when the roof was torn off made it unstable and cost-prohibitive to save. Because of the danger the building poses, demolition could come as early as next week. Flaherty and Recanzone asked people to take a moment and post photos and memories to social media. The mayor also reminded motorists to avoid driving the wrong way on the streets around the building.
