After nearly three years, construction at the Loon Lake Recreation area has started. The day use and campground areas have been closed when the area received significant damage caused by a snowstorm. The Bureau of Land Management has awarded a contract to Hess Contracting of Idaho who plans to use local sub-contractors to complete major repairs this winter. Some work has already started. The area will reopen for use in the summer of 2022. Heavy snow in late February 2019 toppled trees and destroyed the water treatment system, a day-use restroom, and the maintenance shop. The BLM decided to close the area because of unsafe conditions. Visitors can check for updates on the repair progress online at the BLM and Loon Lake Recreation websites.
