School Board Votes to Table Controversial Resolutions on Masks and Curriculum

The North Bend School Board tabled action on two resolutions regarding government mask mandates and teaching Critical Race Theory in K-12 schools. The Board immediately tabled action on the resolution that would have opposed teaching Critical Race Theory. But took public comment on it and the second resolution that opposed the governor’s indoor mask mandate. The motion made by Board Member Julie Thies died after failing to get a second. Board members then asked for a discussion and a work session. One board member indicated the board needed to discuss the comments made at last night’s meeting and the resolution itself. Another indicated developing a plan for how the district would define and use local control would set a precedence for other districts and show the state how serious the district is about local control. 14 people commented on both resolutions. A motion to hold a work session on the mask resolution passed unanimously.
